Dark Skies Matter

Title: Dark Skies Matter! This webinar focuses on the importance of preserving Colorado’s Dark Night Skies in relation to the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument (FLFO). The rapid expansion of urban growth into Colorado’s mountain areas is increasing light pollution and encroaching on pristine dark skies in Colorado. This light pollution is disruptive to native Colorado ecological systems, human health, public safety, astronomy, and energy conservation. The webinar highlights 5 simple ways all of us can help reduce light pollution and educate our friends and neighbors on preserving Colorado’s Dark Skies with help from local Colorado organizations.

Speaker: Mr. Mark Harter has been a Volunteer Ranger at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument for almost 15 years, and leads the Astronomy & Night Sky Programs at FLFO. He is a retired military officer (U.S. Air Force) with 23 years experience leading Air Force Space Operations. Since then, he’s a practicing Aerospace Engineer supporting space projects with the Department of Defense, Civil Space, and currently U.S. Space Force. He has degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Master of Business, and Master of Military Science. He is an avid astronomer, member of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society, and has numerous published astrophotography images including some from FLFO. He resides in the beautiful mountains near Florissant CO.
