Fossil Quarry Day and Research Update

Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 10 am to 2 pm

We will meet at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument at 10 a.m. Dr. Herb Meyer, Monument Paleontologist, will provide a 45-minute talk on his recent research activities at our sister park in Sexi, Peru and update us on the activities of the Monument’s paleo interns.

At 11 am we will proceed to the Florissant Fossil Quarry that is owned and operated by the Clare family. Members will split fossil-bearing shale for two hours and discover unique fossils of the Eocene. The visit to the quarry is free to Friends members. Experienced shale splitters will be available to assist new members.  It is likely everyone will go home with at least one fossil. The usual entrance fee to the Monument will be required to hear Dr. Meyer’s talk. Bring your National Park pass. Kids 15 and under are free for both events.

Bring a Friend or become a Friend. Onsite membership sign up will be available. Park passes will be available at the Monument Visitor Center front desk.

Directions: Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument entrance is 2 miles south on Teller CR1 off the Hwy 24 intersection in Florissant. It will take approximately 1 hour from the west side of Colorado Springs to arrive at the Fossil Beds. The quarry is just south of the Outpost Feed Store in Florissant.

What to Bring: Sun Hat, Water Bottle, sturdy shoes and a sack lunch. There is a Subway sandwich shop in Florissant. Onsite water will be available.

Make new friends and enjoy the Monument. Explore the Visitor Center with our 34 million-year-old fossils or explore 16 miles of easy to moderate trails.
